A ShoffnerKalthoff MES Inc. Safety Coordinator is the key person to lead the company’s safety efforts across their assigned territory, fostering an employee-centered culture that places the safety of each person first in all workplace activities.  The Safety Coordinator reinforces and expands the company's safety programs and activities through superior communication skills and effective relationships with operations leadership and team members.  The Safety Coordinator uses published safety guidelines (OSHA and state/local worksite regulations) as a foundation, always seeking to exceed expectations where possible by focusing upon the importance of each employee's actions in upholding those policies, always with the goal to protect our employees from injuries and eliminate accidents .

Specific expectations to make this happen include:

Builds relationships with all levels of leadership, management teams, and worksite teams to promote and maintain a safe workplace, reinforcing safety awareness in a manner that promotes cooperation, improved morale, and job performance.

Personally role-models workplace behaviors that demonstrate, at all times and in all settings, the highest standards of practical safety, while encouraging openness and a high level of enthusiasm.

Maintains awareness of workplace safety regulations and developments in the field of Health and Safety and incorporates them into the company’s program as needed.

Insures compliance with OSHA regulations.

Assists in the documentation and implementation of required or desired changes in the safety program.

Develops Customer and Site-Specific Safety plans, Accident Hazard Analysis (AHAs), LOTO, Fall Protection, etc.

Plans and Coordinates Safety Meetings at our jobsites, with onsite participation in 80% or greater is expected.  Works with field leaders to improve their delivery of safety communications.

Schedules and performs announced and unannounced jobsite visits and safety audits, monitoring hazardous working conditions and employee practices through these site visits.

Reviews documentation to insure all required onsite records and reports are complete, accurate and submitted per established procedures.  This includes reviewing all daily 5X5 topics submitted by field, tool box talks, supervisor & manager job site safety reports.

Coordinates site safety visits with the SKMES Safety Director and CSUSA Regional Safety Director.

Accompanies all safety, health and insurance inspectors on walk-through inspections.

Investigates accidents (and close calls, as appropriate).   Prepares and maintain required reports with superior detail.   Identifies actions intended to prevent re-occurrence.

Manages Driver’s Alert program.

Provides safety orientation to crews at jobsites.

Leads Safety On-boarding/Orientation presentations to newly hired employees.

Provides training of OSHA 10 Hr, OSHA 30 Hr, Trench Safety, Confined Space, Scaffolding, Fall Protection, etc.   

Assist the Safety Director in ensuring the development, implementation and updating of required written safety and health programs and plans. These may include, as needed:

Hazard Communication Program Exposure Control Program
Hazard Assessment and PPE Respiratory Protection Program
Chemical Hygiene Plan
Hazard Communication Program
Lockout/Tag out
Confined Space Entry Program
Emergency Action Plans


  • Minimum five years construction experience with emphasis on construction and/or industrial safety (mechanical trade experience preferred).
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, with a major in occupational safety or close related field is preferred, but not required.
  • Demonstrated training and communication (verbal and written) skills are crucial to success in this role, equally in classroom and on-site settings.
  • High knowledge of current safety and loss control practices.
  • Conversant in current federal, state, local and company safety regulations and policies.
  • Possess a current OSHA 30-hr card.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the mechanical and electrical industry.
  • Physically able to lift at least 60 lbs and climb ladders and stairs.
  • Strong knowledge of computer skills including Excel and MS Office is required.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving history.
  • Acquire an OSHA 500-501 certificate within 5 years of employment.
