Electricians & Electrician Helpers
Position Summary for Electrician:
Plans layout, installs and repairs wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus and control equipment. Plans new or modified installation to minimize waste of material, provide access for future maintenance and avoid unsightly, hazardous or unreliable wiring consistent with specifications, local and national electrical codes. Prepares sketches showing location of wiring and equipment, or follows diagrams or blueprints ensuring that concealed wiring is installed before completion of future walls, ceilings and flooring. Measures, cuts, bends, threads assembles and installs electrical conduit using tools such as hacksaw, pipe threader and conduit bender. Pulls wiring through conduit assisted by helper. Splices wires by stripping insulation from terminal leads using knife or pliers, twisting or soldering wires together, and applying tape or terminal caps. Connects wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment using hand tools. Installs control and distribution apparatus, such as switches, relays and circuit breaker panels, fastening in place with screws or bolts using hand tools and power tools. Connects power cables to equipment such as electric range or motor, and installs grounding leads. Tests circuits to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components using various testing instruments. Observes functioning of installed equipment or system to detect hazards and need for adjustments, relocation or replacement. May repair faulty equipment or systems.
Position Summary for Electrician Helpers:
Assists electrician to install and repair electrical wiring, fixtures and equipment, performing any combination of the following tasks: gathers tools and supplies to be used at work site according to instructions; measures, buts and bends wire and conduit using ruler and hand tools; drills holes for wiring using power drill and pulls or pushes wiring through conduit or opening; traces out short circuits in wiring using knowledge of wiring and test meter; assists in lifting, positioning and fastening objects such as switchgear, wiring, conduit and motors; performs minor repairs such as replacing fuses, light fixtures, lamps and switches using hand tools; maintains tools and equipment and keeps supplies and parts in order; disassembles defective electrical equipment using hand tools.
